Staff at Association of McGill University Support Employees Unionize with TGU
MONTRÉAL, Québec Sep. 13, 2023 — The dedicated workers at the Association of McGill University Support Employees (AMUSE) have officially unionized with the General Union, marking the union’s first certified bargaining unit.
Staff at AMUSE, a local of the Public Service Alliance of Canada that represents 1,400 temporary workers employed by McGill University, play an essential role in enabling a high-turnover, low-wage workforce to assert their labour rights on the job.
With the General Union's support, AMUSE staff aim to enhance their ability to carry out their crucial mission effectively.
The General Union looks forward to constructive dialogue and collaboration with AMUSE to create a more secure and sustainable work environment.
"I've been involved in union and labour work for 5 years now - I love my job with AMUSE and always have. The people I've worked with, the members of AMUSE and engaging authentically with them has been so rewarding. Something important to me that I've learned is that you don't need to hate your job to want a union. Any group of workers having a seat at the table when it comes to their working conditions, and taking the time to ensure those working conditions are solidified through collective bargaining is a natural step for any workplace. I am proud of AMUSE for supporting unionization and being an example of the values and principles they hold strongly for their membership. I look forward to sitting at the negotiation table with them!”
